Self Portrait as Twins Sharing A Room - 2008
"In this group show of work by young photographers, Clinton Hayden's stands out. First, because it does not feature pictures of bleak urban wastelands, indigenous people staring down the lens, or out-of-focus youths and trees. Second, it's technically masterful, with saturated colours and a perfect moody balance between light and dark. Third, it's spooky and interesting. The idea of the ghostly twin, or doppelganger, is played out through a series of self-portraits. But he's not blandly whining, "Hey I'm unsure of my identity in this crazy mixed-up world". The Staged images seem to criticise pretend-independent culture, in which a P.A.M. T-shirt, a hipster cardigan and dirty Chucks are a double-breasted suit equivalent for the professionally rebellious. His portraits (one twin looms over the other while he's sleeping) stray further into Narcissus territory, where vanity leads not to belonging at all, but to paranoia and isolation."
